Rhododendron (elepidote - Large Leaved)
"Big Leaf" rhododendrons. These are what most people first think of when they hear the word rhododendron. “Elepidote” literally means “without scales,” referring to a characteristic of the familiar large leaf rhododendrons. Foliage of this class of rhododendrons, although generally larger in size, can vary from about an inch long as in the species R. proteoides to as much as three feet long in the species R. sinogrande. Some have incredible fuzzy indumentum on the new growth and under the leaves, as on R. yakushimanum. The flowers can be almost any color. This group includes a very large number of hybrids. RHODODENDRON 'Absolute Citron'
(C8) Flowers open from deep yellow buds to bright medium yellow with red speckling on the upper lobe. The color, compact habit and heavy budding came from Hachmann's 'Goldkrone', and hardiness, foliage, flowers, and compact habit came from the mother. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Alena'
(C8) This has some of the finest dark green glossy foliage to be found, as well as a wide mounded and dense growth habit. Pure white flowers emerge from light pink buds. Needs good light intensity to bloom well. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Amber Mist' aka 'Ada Lohr'
(C8) The flowers are similar to 'Janet Blair', but larger and deeper in color, with a very large yellow flare which ages to bronze. Leaves are very dark olive green, matte finished, each with a slight twist or “wave” to it. Very cold hardy. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Anah Kruschke'
(C8) A mid to late season bloomer. A hardy, sun tolerant rhododendron. It has a compact growth habit with shiny dark green leaves. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Anita Gehnrich'
(C8) Anita has slightly smaller foliage than "Solidarity", although both foliages are heavy textured and of similar color. Anita's flowers are a tad smaller and retain more color when fully open, and she has a lower, more spreading growth habit. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Aronimink'
(C8) Another of the famous 12507 series grown at Swarthmore College. The flowers are a strong rosy red, about 4" across with 20 in a truss. The plant tends to be a bit open in shade. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Babylon'
(C8) A tall mounded plant having magnificent trusses of 4" -5" white flowers with a red throat. The striking long leaves and red stems make this a desirable plant even when not in bloom. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Barmstedt'
(C8) A yak hybrid that looks great even when not in bloom. The plant is a low-growing mound with recurved dark green leaves. The flowers are rosy red with darker edges displayed beautifully on the plant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Bear Claw'
(C8) This "bear" has a coat of brown indumentum under the leaves, new growth covered in fuzzy wuzzy fur, and a short stout shape. Early pink buds open to white flowers in a full truss. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Bellringer'
(C8) This hybrid has creamy flowers with a strong yellow blotch. It develops into an erect, well-shaped plant with shiny dark green leaves. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Ben Moseley'
(C8) This late midseason blooming Dexter hybrid is one of the must-haves for the complete garden. Its slightly frilled purplish pink flowers with dark spotting in the throat put on a show just as the mid-season crescendo of other blooms begins to subside. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Big Deal'
(C8) Cream flowers and a deeper yellow blotch. The overall effect makes the flowers seem more yellow than they really are. The foliage is dark matte green, large and rounded on a densely branched compact plant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Bikini Island'
(C8) Finally, the long-awaited hardy red? Well almost — hardy yes; red?— more deep rose than red. Scarlet-red rose flowers with white throats emerge in large trusses. Dark green leaves clothe a plant whose habit is upright. This is a tough, hardy plant. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Blewbury'
(C) White flowers, on the small side, 1 1/2" across, white with upper throat spotted purplish-red. Trusses hold 18-20 flowers. Leaves narrow, 3 1/2" long, with, recurved edges, lightly covered with pale brown woolly indumentum. more info

RHODODENDRON 'Boule de Neige'
(C8) The flowers are white, in perfect rounded trusses, and geometrically proportioned to the leaves. The habit is dome shaped. Leaves are matte green, and the plant’s constitution is tough and very hardy. more info
